A phone book is probably the wrong tool for this job. You want lightweight IMPACT from something that's not hard enough to damage the mouthpiece. I'd try a bit of soft wood about the size of a hammer handle. You can swing it fast enough to provide the impact you need, but it shouldn't harm the rim or its finish.
