I have several Giardinelli J-series in my cigar box (enough about cigar boxes, already!). I was told, lo those many years ago when Giardinelli still had his store in NYC, that the "J" stood for James Stagliano, then principal of the BSO. I can't confirm the validity of this, but it sounds likely. During the time they were made, they did vary among themselves, either because the cutters began to wear or different craftsmen were assigned to make them. It's noticeable on the J4s and J6s I have. One J4 (a very early one, I think), a screw rim version, is actually about .5 mm wider than the others.
