I'm (unfortunately, belatedy) forwarding this from Tom Varner who was
having some trouble posting it. It sounds more than cool; I hope you
check it out.

Hi All---last week I played in a fun concert at the Seattle Art
Museum. The arrangements by the the great Gil Evans and Gerry
Mulligan, for the Claude Thornhill Big Band, from the mid and late
40's, with myself and Mike Simpson on horn, transcribed, researched,
and led by Dr. David Deacon-Joyner of Pacific Lutheran University.
Mike and I got to "be" Sandy Siegelstein, or William Wechlser, or John
Graas. Gil Evans was working out his ideas for bands with 2 horns,
tuba, extra clarinets, for the "Birth of the Cool" nonet ('49 and
'50) and for his later work with Miles Davis (Porgy and Bess, etc.).
It was "bebop meets big band with a more cool touch," I would say. On
youtube, if you type in Thornhill and Gil Evans, these is some great
stuff up there now. (Anthropology, Arab Dance, Buster Rides Again,
etc.)
This concert was recorded and will be aired on KPLU this Sunday, Dec.
19, at 1:00 pm Pacific time. It will also be on the web, streamed, at
www.KPLU.org. Go to "Jazz Northwest" , Jim Wilke, host. It will
also be available as a podcast about a week later.
More soon on other topics---in the meantime, all the best---Tom Varner
My new cd, "Heaven and Hell," is now at Amazon and at
www.Omnitone.com/heavenandhell . And, now, lots of older stuff of
mine up at ITunes now, as well.
