Hi All--more on this when I have more time, but, yes, Lydia, and all, Dan G. is a FANTASTIC player who knows his stuff. The Meridian Brass (brass quintet plus drums) is a great group that he has played with for years, & they do a very wide range of material. For busy free-lancers who do new music , knowledge of quarter-tone and "just intonation" is an important skill. New music groups in NY, Koln, Wien, Hamburg, SF, etc. etc., would need those skills.
I did a piece a few years ago, and recorded it for a cd, by composer Mathew Rosenblum (teaches now at Un of Pittsburgh) where I had to "jump" between the 2 worlds of equal temperament and just intonation, with a pianist who played 2 pianos with the 2 tuning systems at the same time. Not easy at all, but in the end, fun and rewarding. The piece was "Continental Drift" on the cd by pianist Loretta Goldberg, titled "Tone Over Tone" (Opus One 135) Besides Ligeti, there is other good work by Ben Johnson, Martin Bresnick, (often ww quintet) many others, with other tuning systems. I'll try to provide some links as soon as I can-----BEST to all--tom v -- Tom Varner www.tomvarnermusic.com _______________________________________________ post: [email protected] unsubscribe or set options at https://pegasus.memphis.edu/cgi-bin/mailman/options/horn/archive%40jab.org
