Ronald Janezic, solo horn of the Vienna Philharmonic had cut through his upper
lip very badly
during playing soccer, when he ran into another player (or this player ran into
him). We thought it
as a tragedy, but he recovered quickly so well, that he was able to play
principal horn for "Rosenkavalier"
mid December.

If things do not become complicated, injuries in the mouth area tend to heal
quickly, if no nerve is
cut through, so the muscles work. Ronald got just a few stitches to fix the
muscles.

John, there is also good hope for your friend. Your friend should still rest,
but could do a bit
of lip gymnastics using the mouthpiece only, just to give the healing lip some
"mouthpiece feeling".
She should wait six weeks total until resuming horn playing, but on "beginners
level" only, means
range from any low to "middle space c" only, but also for few minutes, long
notes & slow scale up
and down. Increase this work day by day even leaving intervals between these
5-minutes-exercises.
Progress step by step upwards for one step per day, so she can get back to
shape within two weeks.

If your friend is in good spirit, she will conquer this accidents damage
quickly. But she must obey
these rules: slow slow slow no pressing no forcing be patient and again patient.
