The rotors themselves of course shall work smoothly and the bottom plates shall
sit correctly for a free and non-clackering movement.

But there are other moving parts sometimes overlooked. The lever arm connecting
the two valves with the thumb valve sits on an axle connected to the main
tubing.

This axle may become dry and/or ever so slightly worn thereby causing
unevenness
in the movement of the lever arm.

Another cause for problems may be minuscule dirt particles or grates from wear
sitting in the tight space between the axle and the bearing on the lever arm.

I have experienced this problem not in the exact same place, as I don’t have a
triple, but in the double T- joints (Rollenglieder) connecting lever arms and
push rods (S-links) in old style rotary valves. As I am not living near a
repair
shop, I took the cheap road of flushing these links with Blue Juice, my
favourite oil for all moving parts. Thin and penetrant, but so volatile, that
frequent oiling is necessary.

Taking the lever arm assembly apart and cleaning it wouldn’t be too
complicated.
But the oil flush maybe solves the problem immediately.

Subject: [Hornlist] E. Schmid triple F/Bb sticks

I am having problems with the change valve between low F and Bb in my F/Bb/f
Schmid triple horn. It has a long lever and operates two valves on each side
of
the lever simultaneously. When I release the lever from Bb to F (I have the
valves standing in F) there is often a little catch, or sticking. I have had
two different repair guys look at it, both valves have been taken apart, and
the
strings and bumpers replaced, but it seems to be getting worse. Extensive
daily
oiling inside and outside the valves seems to help a little, but then the
sticking will start up again for no reason.

Has anyone run across this problem or does anyone have any suggestions?

Dan
