That's nothing new in small schools! When I taught in Grantsburg, Wis (pop slightly under 1,000 at the time), my first chair trombone was the quarterback, my only tuba, the halfback. 4 of my 5 percussionists were cheerleaders, the 5th (and only male in the section) was on the JV squad. Several trumpet and trombone players were either JV or 2nd string varsity. We had a great arrangement whereby the younger football players were band members until after half time, then suited up for football for the 2nd half. The cheerleaders marched the halftime show with the band. (It helped that the choir director was the assistant football coach! And I happily lent a hand with the track teams in the spring.)
