I've done this, at the price of a 2nd hose to experiment with in 
advance.  I think that I needed 2 (3?) full arm-lengths, so it was easy 
& fun to measure out in public.  Best to cut it a bit long so as to tune 
(with the piano?) by cutting off little bits until tuning is 
satisfactory.  For an encore, you can cut off a bit more and finish up 
with say, the Mozart #3 rondo.  The 16th-note run near the end is a 
crowd pleaser.  I used a box-cutter knife instead of scissors, but I was 
always afraid that I would hurt myself with it.  Practice!
