Hello Lawrence,

it seems that there are some occasions where you not only take two bells with
you, but two or three horns. There is a famous story about a horn audition when
Fritz Reiner was the boss in Chicago.
A long retired well known horn player, then a candidate for the audition,
walked in with three horns. But Fritz Reiner asked him: "Whhatt for is tziss
horrn ?" - "It is my Mahler horn, Sir !" - "Hmm, and tziss other horrn ?" - "It
is my Mozart horn, Sir !" - "And tzeh third horrn, whatt for is tziss ?" -
"Sir, this is my Wagner horn !" - long pause - "Would you mind playing Mozart
for me, - - with your Mahler horn ????". - The story is told that way.

Do you know, why some sections insist that everybody uses the same model from
the same maker ? -
Right, as all these instruments have identical "defects" (all f2 too flat, the
written e1 too sharp - or similar), the section will sound balanced superbly.
But how about the intonation when playing together with other instrument groups
??????
