Science disagrees with you Hans. If you technically clone a Strad, Amati,
Raoux, Paxman, etc. atom for atom, molecule for molecule, then it would be
exactly the same. The only issue would be with radiometric aging for anything
in the Violin using particular Carbon isotopes, but if you had the technology
to clone things exactly with the same isotope ratios that occur due to aging
then it would be exactly the same.

Believe it or not, if there was a way to clone a human being in the same method
where molecule for molecule is the same - and the person is the exact copy
(same age, etc.) then the memories and skills and talents would still be
intact. The reasoning for this is that muscle memory is not only built into the
muscles, but the brain stores memories as specific chemicals, so they are
physically there and are measurable.

HOWEVER: Cloning on the nanometer level like this likely won't arrive for a
very long time so it makes the discussion rather moot.

As an aside, I often argue that there is no 'spirit' with human nature because
it categorizes certain things as unsolvable mysteries which we invent answers
for. Yes, there are some things we don't know yet, but you simply say "I don't
know" because saying it's a spirit or ghost or demon or whatever is the reason
behind musicality means we invent an answer that explains everything and
explains nothing. There's no doubt that amazing musicians exist - but I don't
believe for a moment that their level of musicality would die with them because
I feel it is ALWAYS teachable and in the end explainable to a satisfactory
degree. Plus, I don't feel that this opinion/approach at all takes any
enjoyment out of life because to me knowledge and understanding is enjoyment
(as well as acknowledging ignorance and humility). Finally, it is an enrichment
in my life (and many others) to realize that what may be 'impossible' or
'unattainable' or even 'unexplainable' really could be given the right
circumstances and knowledge.

How can you teach the unteachable? How can you explain the unexplainable?
Musicality has many mysteries behind it, but we won't solve them by inventing
answers. Plus, we must remember that every mystery that has ever been solved in
the history of humanity has turned out to be not magic.

After all, what is talent but the right genes, the right preparation, and the
right attitude?

Then again, this is my opinion and I respectfully disagree. Take it with
however many grains of salt you want.

a long boat trip.

Print-clone the best horn (?) o the best violin (Stradivarius), but also

print-clone

the most famous players (whoever you might think of) and implement the best

characteristics of yourself (??), but still remain ........... incompetent,

unequal, with

the same problems as before, because competence, talent, strength, knowledge

cannot be cloned, ....... fortunately (socialism tried that !! and failed !).

In your particular case of a "travel-horn" you first have to find the most

suitable master piece.

Dear Valerie, you must have a lot of free time, to find all this stuff.

Keeping the chops in shape ? Well, let us talk about the task. The bigger

problem is, keeping the lips used to the mouthpiece (rim, pressure, etc.), which

can be solved just doing some exercises with the mouthpiece alone, but just

some light exercises, perhaps several minutes each at different times of the

day.

Avoid expecting any great sound. Do never force things.

Next problem to solve: endurance. This should never be any problem. Well,

admitted:

The endurance is less after two weeks absence from real playing. But that´s not

a

problem at all, as this endurance will be back after the first rehearsal, where

you

play somewhat cautiously to avoid burning your lips. Or plan an extra day to

bring

endurance back.

This might work fine for most of the professionals, but might be problematic

for those who never had proper training /lessons by a professional teacher.

Remember also:

if you had flaws in your playing before the break/travel/etc., these

flaws will be still there.

BTW: anyone heard about the 7,0 quake near Japan/Honshu cost between Sendai &

Fukushima

some six hours ago ?

We here in Munich had a thunderstorm at around 09:00 PM with normal size hail

stones

& much rain, lasting 25 minutes, but it returned at 10:00 P.M. with a power, I

have never

seen in my life. The lightnings flashing like New Years Eve fireworks for full

45 minutes.

The thunders were strong but as there were so many it was more a

"Goetterdaemmerung"-like

scenario with permanent loud rumpling & grumbling for 45 minutes - and it rains

the past 8 hours.
