I'm afraid that we're going to see many more of these kinds of posts. An example here in Michigan, the new Governor, and his party are bent on destroying the tenure system of educator's, and they have instituted many cuts, so my grand daughter's school system has voted to eliminate all Music, Art and Physical Education (which as a musician infuriates me to no end). I plan on attending a Board of Education meeting and since I am still a tax payer, I intend to ream them a new anal orifice. These people are not stupid, they should know the value of a well rounded education. When I was in school, I seriously don't think I would have finished high school if had not been for a great mentor, my high school Band Director. We as musicians MUST stand firm and write our representatives and demand that Fine Arts are NOT eliminated in the United States.
I witnessed the terrible strike this past year between the idiot management of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and the Musicians, since I have the privilege of working in other orchestras with some of these fine musicians. The Orchestra has lost many of the outstanding Principal musicians (the entire percussion section) leaving due to inept management of the Orchestra. The Orchestra lost an outstanding Concert master (who left basically because she became fed up with the idiots running the Orchestra). I know that a member of the horn section lurks this list, and I hope he doesn't leave the Orchestra. Maybe he can send me a private email since I have not been able to surmise if Karl Pituch (Principal horn) has left or is planning on leaving...I surely hope not! Off soapbox now: Sign me, one very disgusted hornist in Michigan, Walt Lewis ________________________________ From: Luke Zyla <[email protected]> To: The Horn List <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, August 9, 2011 9:44 AM Subject: [Hornlist] NEA funding cuts Our orchestra had to cancel a tour due to the recent additional NEA funding cuts. I was wondering if anyone else has experienced the effects of this reduction in funding. I feel sorry for the kids we played for last year in the hinter lands of WV that will not have the opportunity to listen to live orchestra music this year.
