This is human nature, although an admittedly sad aspect of human
nature.  In the bicycling world, people spend hundreds, even thousands
of dollars to shave a pound from the weight of their machine. Pushing
themselves away from the dinner table without dessert would accomplish
more - and cost them nothing.

I'm sure there are a million other stories to be told along similar
lines from other areas of interest.  After all, why work hard when you
can throw money at the problem instead?
