William D Revelli, the conductor of fame at The University of
Michigan, used to demonstrate this. Whenever a trumpet or cornet player
would complain that he couldn't get his horn in tune, Dr. Revelli would
take the player's horn, and play it perfectly in tune without making any
adjustments to the slides.

Subject: Re: [Hornlist] tuning

A very well known horn teacher said in November last year, "Don't bother

tuning up, just play in tune"

One of the best wind ensembles I have heard never tuned up, they just
played
in tune.

All the best,

Lawrence
