While I agree with Herr Pizka, and with Scott, I see this as a music
director's problem. Community orchestras are particularly lax in this
regard. Conductors will usually ignore the brass and sometimes, the
woodwinds, concentrating on the strings and their attacks, bowings, etc.

It is not for me to tell the Principal that he or she is too loud, too
penetrating, too ugly (sound, that is) It is the conductor who should
decide what sounds he/she wishes from the section and demand exactly
that. I do agree that we hornists should realize that the horn is best
suited to the "filler" role adding a blend of colors to the orchestra,
but if the first chair doesn't realize it (and doesn't subscribe to this
posting) who can tell them? Usually I will say something like, "do you
want that passage to be so (short, long, loud, brassy, staccato, legato,
etc}" overemphazing what he/she is doing. Hopefully they will consider
their over emphasis and correct, but, alas, all too infrequently. Any
suggestions short of physically getting the point across?
