With regard to screw-bell horns in flat cases, I have found that
the original case for my Yamaha YHR-766 is quite vulnerable to
"squashing"
on the flat sides. Result over time was a modest flattening around the
bell rim. Bob Osmun kindly rolled it out (before my very eyes) at the
IHS Rochester meeting some years ago. No real harm done. Simple
preventive action is to cut a piece of plastic swimming "noodle"
to fit as a support post inside the detached bell in the case.
This stuff is strong, light, easily cut, and cheap.(In the US, try
K-Mart
or your local "drug" store.) Its length should result in a snug fit when
the case is closed. (In my situation, the 2 1/2 inch diameter piece is
6 inches long for my 766, 5 1/2 inches long for my 667D.) The result
is not perfection, but does really help make the case sturdier and
more protective, both in everyday use and in shipping situations.
Attempts to make these posts serve double duty as specialty mutes
has so far been unsuccessful.
Speaking of theYamaha 766, for me, it's is a great horn, despite its
apparant failure in the marketplace. If anyone out there has a 766N
lying around unused in the closet or under the piano, I'd be interested
in working a deal, maybe even involving my 667D in a swap.
