I've never had problems carrying my fixed-bell Yamaha case on planes.  
Usually I politely ask the flight attendant when I board if there's any 
room in the coat closet for my case.  Almost every time they let me put 
it in the closet and then I don't even have to worry about it taking up 
my legroom.  Sometimes you'll run into someone who's a bit grouchy, but 
a little bit of forceful persuasion usually works in that case.
