Ask the players in your orchestra why _they_ sport the gold. Compare them to the answers you get from this list. It's possible a lot of the players in your orchestra have them because the player: think it looks cool, thinks it makes them look pro, the teacher has one, etc. However, you might get one player that has actually thought about it an made a decision about what is right for them. I had a gold plated mp because I play with a wetish embouchure and I liked the slickness and the warmth of the gold. My current mp doesn't come in gold and I've been to lazy to send it out to be plated. I've survived.
