Since you live so near to him, I suggest you contact Mr. Randall Ulmer 147 Jefferson Avenue Tenafly, NJ 07670 201-871-9841.
He is a master craftsman in brass instrument repair and a hornist. He works from home and has been doing excellant work for decades. I first met him when he lived on West 30th street in NYC about 25 years ago. I had him cut my Conn 28D bell and install a screw rim. About three years I entrusted him to tear down and completely rebuild "Maxine" the 28D do all the dent work and completely refinish her. I wouldn't trust my horn to anyone else. His prices are also very resonable. I'm sure he'd be able to at least tell you where to look for good reference materials to study from. Another suggestion is Matt the repair specialist at Dillon Music. Give him a call sometime and pick his brain...I did. He's a genuinely friendly guy. I think he used to be a commercial jet-liner engine mechanic. Used to keep'em flying. Now he's an expert metal worker in brass instruments. I hope this helps. Good luck.
