Subject: [Hornlist] Tuckwell "C"

Hello All:
I was at the '72 Horn Symposium in Bloomington..... and was witness to
Mr.
Tuckwell's performance of the Villanelle..... As I recall, he dedicated
his
performance to a British Scholar and Horn Player (???Reginald Night? -
sorry
I can't remember the exact name?) who had recently passed away. The man
had
researched and published a lot of material on the natural horn..... So
Barry
performed the Villanelle on his Holton without using the valves and the
shattered high C at the end was a shocking conclusion to an incredibly
beautiful and technically perfect performance.
I was fortunate enough to get into a Master Class with Mr. Tuckwell 5 or
6
years later in Stratford, Canada. Mr. Tuckwell was a complete joy to
work
with. When HE brought up the Villanelle incident, he explained that he
felt
he had finished the hard part of the piece, and had relaxed his
concentration for an instant at what he considered a routine bit!
He was guest artist with our Orchestra years later, and he not only
remembered me by name - but also had news of almost everyone else at the
workshop..... A great gentleman, and wonderful player!
