I had to pull the slide out because of the laws of physics, not my
embouchure. Increasing the temperature from 40 deg F to 100 deg F (4 deg
C to 33 deg C) increases the speed of sound by 5%. On a 9 foot horn (Bb
horn) that's 6 inches, or a slide pull of 3 inches (7.5 cm). Another 1
inch (2.5 cm) is required on the F tuning slide. I don't know about your
8D, but mine couldn't handle that. And outside temperatures vary by more
than that. If you only have to move the slide 1 cm, you are also
correcting with your hand and embouchure.

I wasn't trying to intentionally critique you personally Herb. I also
don't know that the embouchure comment from Hans was directed at a
specific person since Hans is normally directing his commentary to the
whole list and using whomever's post as a starting point.

I never fell out into formation in a situation where the horn started
that cold and warmed up. The Marine Corps doesn't spring for air
conditioning at most of its facilities! I have always gone the other
way. Lest we think only of fair warm weather, I have performed outside
in Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, and Utah during winter as well. Utah was
definitely the coldest for me at the 2002 Olympics-17 deg F as the high
for our week of gigs. My experience-your mileage may vary-was that most
everyone's instrument changed up or down in a similar manner and so I
never adjusted a great deal to bring the pitch into tune-movable "do" so
to speak. Of course it took until the 2nd tune for most of the kids to
adjust completely, but in other bands that had more experience (read
older and "been there done that") everyone adjusted on the fly. Also in
the bands I played with in the Corps, the ww took over the strings job
of attempting to play as sharp as possible (saxes/piccs) and again it
was the horns and low brass that held the pitch to reasonable levels.
