I am throwing in my two cents worth on the mutes. Just last week I was at a rehearsal and our fourth horn came in and got out her Ion Balu mute and showed it to me. I have to say that the workmanship on John Kowalchuk's mutes are MUCH better than Ion's, and John's prices are also MUCH better. John uses Maple veneer on his and he also does a much better finish job. On Ion's, there were blobs of what looked like epoxy on the base. Not so on John's. Since the principal horn was absent due to a death in her family, I got to play 1st on Dvorak 9, second movement. Since leading the section fell to me for the evening, I asked the fourth hornist to move up and to play the second part. The two mutes did a nice job of matching in sound. Think about what you want to pay. Ion's go for over a Hundred dollars U.S. funds. John's are cheaper at Seventy dollars U.S. funds. For Thirty dollars less, I think you get a much better mute. That's my two cents on the matter...
