Our school is looking to buy some new double horns for our Middle School program.
What make and model would you recommend middle school age students?

You'll probably get lots of answers, many of them conflicting. These are my opinions as a hornist and an experienced middle school teacher. I am assuming you will not start students on horn from the very beginning. In my experience, changing flute or clarinet players after the first year's work is more successful.
* Yamaha makes a student line Geyer wrapped model that some teachers in my area have liked very much.
* A very underrated horn for young players is the Conn 9D. It's an 8D with a smaller bell throat. The ones I have tried have been quite good.
* Although many will disagree, I do not like Holtons for youngsters (except Merkers)
* If you are starting 6th graders (or younger), there is a Besson made especially for little hands and bodies. There are also some smaller instruments.
* Do not buy any Chinese horns, regardless of price.
I hope this is helpful.
