>My question remains, why are Holtons so popular with schools, when Yamaha, Hoyer, and >others make similarly priced instruments?
This is going to sound harsh and I don't mean it to be. I have owned two Holtons (an H77 and a 179). I don't like Holtons (except Merkers), so I will admit my comments may be somewhat biased.
Holtons are popular in schools because they are available. UMI will not market to "discounters" (Woodwind & Brasswind, Giardinelli, ect) and many local stores (at least in my area) do not stock any (or many) horns. That leaves Holton's only competition (in the US) Yamaha and low grade imports. Band directors who are not horn players have read Farkas' book in their brass methods class and Farkas' name is on the horn, therefore...
Sorry if I have offended anyone.
