Dear Fred, I recommend that you go to an audiologist and have proper earplugs made. There are some available that block out the most harmful of sounds, while the rest comes through quite well. Still not great for playing horn, as you tend to hear more of what is happening inside your mouth than anything else, but for the dangerous times, most worthwhile. Mine cost in the range of $175.00 (Canadian) I believe.
