It definitely depends upon the quality of the band & how you perform
there. Dennis Brain was definitely in the Air Force Concert Band - a big
difference. And British is British also (tradition). And he joined the
band, when he was a soloist already. Another difference.

Dear all

We used to have a tradition in the UK of band players becoming
professional players. Dennis Brain, Alan Civil, Norman Del Mar, Derek
Taylor, James Brown, Frank Lloyd, David Lloyd, Tony Randall, Denzil
Floyd, to name just a few.

All became members of first rate orchestras, maybe it is a difference in
approach. I was always told by my teachers you could use any situation
to improve, if you really wanted to!
