Hello listers, If I could just wade in here with my two cents worth.
As far as being concerned with grades, to limit the perspective to just how they
affect one's ability to go to the desired music school is short-sighted. By achieving
good grades all around one demonstrates character, perseverance, and learns more about
how to succeed at any task i.e. "job, career," than simply the content of the course.
Good grades are important - for one's personal life as much as the academic concerns.
[end of soapbox.]
One question that no one has asked of the original poster concerning the student who
wants to buy a new horn - does she have aspirations to continue beyond high school?
If so to limit her considerations to only student models does her no good. She should
be looking to buy the utmost quality that she can afford, and take reasonable time
doing so. If she is only going to play it until she gets out of HS, then maybe she
really doesn't need to purchase a brand new one, or even any, provided the school has
decent horns already available. [I do know from personal experience that many
excellent schools really have incredibly cruddy school owned horns.]
thanks for the patience once again,
In Punto we trust,
Paxmaha
