I went to the Bloomington IHS symposium to try out all the horns, and I wound
up with a Finke Brendan. It is easy to play and is very flexible. I has a
brighter sound than the 8D, but I can even blend with an 8D section with a
stuffy sound (not the true 8D sound). I almost bought a new Holton Merker Geyer
wrap, but it did not support my concept of sound and had an awful thumb lever.
I considered putting on an aftermarket leadpipe on the 8D, but figured that if
that did not work, I was throwing good money after bad. Indeed, another poster
has said he had put an Atkinson pipe on his 8D, but it still was hard to play,
though I'm sure it played better.
I also played someone's Pizka. I liked it, but I didn't fit it. The D in the
staff was unstable on the F side. Even with a Pizka mouthpiece. I know this is
my problem; the owner of the horn didn't have that problem. Interestingly, I
found the same thing happening on a Viennese horn. On the Finke this only
happens on a stopped E2 in the staff, and I can control it. As I improve, I'm
sure I will be able to play a Pizka, but I'm not there yet.
For the record, I am now using a Vincent Bach 7S mouthpiece with the Finke. I
like the Pizka mouthpiece, but I think the 7S fits my mouth better--I have thin
lips and very worn lower incisors.
