Hornlisters:

Excuse the double posting, but I thought that those of you on both lists who
are curious about the more arcane aspects of brass instrument terminology
would be interested in this site.

As a service to those involved in cataloguing and writing about brass
instruments, a resource devoted to brasswind terminology has been added to
the CIMCIM (International Committee of Music Instrument Museums, which is
part of the International Council of Museums) website. The URL is:

    http://cimcim.icom.museum/itt/ittb.html

This is seen as the first of potentially more extensive texts on instrument
terminology. It is very much work in progress, and the authors of this page
welcome comments and suggestions. The person to write in order to suggest
additions, amendments, corrections, or comments is Arnold Myers, Brasswind
Terminology Working Group Member, c/o Edinburgh University Collection of
Historic Musical Instruments. E-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I found it a fascinating and instructive site. For example I never knew (and
probably never previously cared) that the term "grain" refers to the portion
of straight bore between the cup and the backbore of a mouthpiece. Some of
the definitions could be a little more comprehensive. For example, the
definition of "bell" is: "the end of the air-column furthest from the
mouthpiece." Accurate as far as it goes, but it seems to lack a little flair
(or is it "flare"?). There are also fascinating entries with links to other
sites for diagrams and illutrations. So, if you ever wented to know what a
"Berlin Valve" or a "Cornophone" was, this is the site. You might also be
interested in seeing how the authors deal with the "French Horn" vs. "Horn"
designation. The dictionary is in English, but does provide some
translations of German and French terms of art, such as
"Blechblasintrumente" or "Coquilles."
