Hello Everyone,
Just to clarify an issue, I have been getting a lot of comments on
my mouthpiece survey (some not very nice) about the mouthpiece shank
being a Morse 0 taper. This is very true and well known, however, the
Morse 0 taper has a range from .250" to .367" at an angle of just under
1.5 degrees. The horn mouthpiece only uses a small segment of that
taper and the diameter of the shank is the variable that affects the
fit. Most Horn mouthpiece shanks can range anywhere from .290" to
.310" at the small end. The purpose of my mouthpiece survey is not to
see what the taper is, since I already know that, but to see which
mouthpieces are the most popular so that I might measure their shanks
to find their diameter. This way, I can ask my customers what type of
mouthpiece they play and I can adjust the receiver of their mouthpipe
to fit their chosen mouthpiece.
I have also gotten several comments about the diameter being
different even among the same brand. I did not want to complicate the
survey by adding the different models offered by manufacturers. Rest
assured, I plan on measuring every mouthpiece that willingly passes
through the jaws of my calipers and keeping meticulous notes on the
different brands and their models.
Thank you very much to those of you who have filled out the
survey. At the time of this writing, I have received 148 responses.
Right now, Moosewood is way in the lead with 31 responses (Pat yourself
on the back, Tom) and Lawson and Schilke are fighting it out for second
with 21 and 20 responses respectively. The "Other" category is showing
me that I should have put an option for Pizka and Laskey mouthpieces.
They are both proving more popular than quite a lot of the ones I had
on my list. Way to go Hans and Scott. It seems that most people are
using the higher end mouthpieces with the exception of Giardinelli's
strong showing with 15 responses.
Just so you know, the survey will accept multiple responses for
those of you who use more than one mouthpiece (so far the record is 6).
I'll keep the survey going until the end of the month. Then I'll post
the information in case anyone is interested. If you haven't filled
out the survey, you can find it at this link:

Here is the funniest comment I have received so far:
"I'm glad you made this an anonymous survey. I wouldn't want any
knowing I play on a Bach."
Please feel free to top that. I could always use a chuckle.
