Dear All,

As a student of no outstanding brilliance, I have been thwarted to
understand the mysterious meaning of two words that keep popping up on the
list, namely "BRIGHT" and "DARK" tone quality. Now I know this should be as
clear as night and day (ha, ha), but for the life of me I can't figure out
the difference between the two or even exactly what they are.

Don't misunderstand me. I am not asking which is better than the other,
which seems to be a matter of some contention, but simply what they sound
like.

Maybe somebody could recommend examples to listen to: for instance, I have
the compact disc of Dennis Brain playing the four Mozart concertos. Is his
tone "bright" or "dark"?

Thanks for any en(bright)enment on this (dark) subject.

'Pilot Al'
