I can think of a couple of others, under whom I've played: Edouard Forner, who
conducted the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra for a time, studied in Vienna. Horn
with Gottfried von Freiberg and conducting with Hans Swarzowsky. Also Richard
Dunn, who conducted several recordings during the LP days of works featuring
horns. Two I recall offhand: a Musical Heritage recording of music for horns
and voices including Schubert ("Nachtgesang im Wald"), Schumann, and
Mendelssohn, plus others. Another, I think on Kapp records, of concerti for
solo and multiple horns by Barsanti, Telemann, etc. that included James
Stagliano among the players (Richard told me they essentially sight-read the
recording session).
Whoops, just thought of another one: J. Richard (Robert?) Johnson (hope I'm
remembering his name correctly), who was briefly principal horn of the New York
Philharmonic, conducted a number of records (some now on CDs) of the complete
Mozart serenades and divertimenti.
I agree with Hans and Walt Kimple that being a horn player gives a conductor a
lot of insight into practical orchestral possibilities that conductors who come
to the orchestra from piano or with no instrumental background at all (except
theory and orchestration books) often lack.
