Hi Luke,

This is incorrect. I think you must have seen 8DY bells. The 8DR horn has a
red brass bell, 1st branch, and mouthpipe. All other components are nickel
silver. The confusion may stem from the time, ten or twelve years back,
when UMI was lacquering instruments with a goldish-tinted lacquer that
obscured the color of all the components. I remember a lot of people who
thought they had all-brass 10D's. An aside: For reasons known only to
themselves the UMI people have always prided themselves on using some weird
lacquer that nobody else used. The gold-tinted stuff was the worse,
virtually impossible to remove and, when you tried to do a repair, it would
discolor over a very wide area, creating a ugly mess. The lacquer in the
immediate vicinity of the repair would melt and run down into the work. This
stuff may have had plusses, too, but I don't know of any.

Greetings of the Season!

Bob Osmun

There is no real rose brass in a 8-D. The bell tails are made in one piece
and shipped to Chuck Ward. He cuts the bell tails, installs the rings, and
ships them back to Conn. They are regular brass with gold colored laquer.
I saw it with my own eyes when I was in his shop.

By the way, have you heard that the Lawsons have sold the business to
Kendall Betts? He will move the business to New Hampshire. They are
training apprentices to take over production now.

CORdially,
