I must admit, a lot of people claim there is no or little difference in
lacquered versus unlacquered instruments and attribute the noticing of a
difference to peoples' absence from the instrument during the
un-lacquering process.

Well...I unlacquered my horn myself and it took all of about an hour
(Lawson horn- uses pretty thin, easy-to-remove lacquer and I used
ZipStrip) so I had no down time from the instrument. I can assure you,
the difference was substantial.

In addition, I took the horn to my rehearsal the next day and every
other player in the section commented (and no, you could not visibly see
a difference yet since oxidation hadn't taken effect yet - at least not
to a visible level). Even the conductor commented.

The overall sound was more forward and spoke easier - especially at
louder volumes.

The difference was NOT subtle.

I have a difficult time accepting it when people claim there is no
difference, especially those who have never actually tried the exact
same instrument with and without lacquer.

Just my $.02 worth...

J.

OK. Thanks. It isn't a big deal, just idle curiosity.

The valves were re-plated and otherwise overhauled by Walter
Lawson himself early in 2006. I picked up the horn on Mar. 3,
because that's the day I wrote the check. No improvement (or
decrease!) in response, though the valves, esp. no. 2, are
noticeably tighter and quieter. Walter has ascribed the problem
to the "lacquer" they were using then.

        Thanks again.
