Things change over time.  You might be interested in 
an article by Harold Meek called "THE HORN!".  It's in 
The Horn Call, Vol. I, No. 2, dated May, 1971 (page 19). 
 
Frankly, I refer to our instrument as the "French horn" 
because I have gotten tired of qualifing the "horn" as 
the "FRENCH horn ..... not the s*x*ph*n*" .... etc. 
It might just be a regional Kansas City thing.?.?
