I used to think that these parts were in Bb basso, but I no longer
believe that to be the case.

Travis Bennett:
It is a strange register for tuben, but then look at where Stravinsky writes 
the opening bassoon solo!

I've always played it up, in several orchestras over the last 32 years. I agree with Travis about the sound of the high range being something Stravinsky would deliberately exploit, and with Bob about the whole tone scales at the end of part I being an octave above the tubas. It's a great part that's a lot of fun to play!
