Don't overlook the fact that in orchestral music the very different tone  
qualities of the brass instruments, and especially the horns, when crooked in  
different keys made a vast difference to the mood of a piece.  In this  
respect, 
for example, a piece in A major was much brighter than a piece in D -  Mozart 
symphonies are a good example of this.
