And this answers for me why the F side is mounted on top of the B flat side.
I always thought it should be the other way with the shorter slides on top, but it's now clear from the information y'all have provided the F slides on the bottom wouldn't clear the bell, specially the 3rd valve slide.
I always thought that the longest slides are on top of the shortest just for aesthetical reasons.
