Scott Young posts a quote from an anonymous "nationally syndicated
columnist" as follows:
"Will someone please tell me how millions of dollars to protect the habitat
of a marsh mouse in San Francisco, or millions for the National Endowment
for the Arts, or billions for the ACORN neighborhood organizing groups is
going to stimulate the economy?"
It would be useful to know who this columnist is because he is spreading
disinformation. There is NO mention of marsh mice in the stimulus package,
nor are there billions of dollars for ACORN. I believe that all funding for
ACORN was stricken from the bill. I do not know how much was finally
allotted to the NEA, but I agree with Scott that support for the arts ought
to be an essential part of any economic stimulus. In fact we are still
enjoying the fruits of artists who were able to continue working thanks to
support from the New Deal in the thirties.
As for "sicko" artists poisoning the well for the rest of us... let us be
wary of putting decisions of artistic taste in the hands of government
bureaucrats. Better to allow funding for some art that some of us dislike
rather than giving the government the power to deny funding for certain
artists whom they declare to be "entartete."
