Here's something I thought about. I am currently working on Strauss 2 and
I'm one of those players who uses a lot of B flat horn - almost to the point
where I may get a single B flat just as a cheap back up horn in case I need it.
I'm well aware that some notes are not readily available on a single B flat
compared to a standard double but at any rate I looked at the harmonics for a
C and F valve along with the standard A stopping valve and thought to myself
why aren't single E flat horns widely available anymore?
There are still some high B flat horns out there and Bb with high F and high
Eb sides, and even a few Bb /high Bb horns but I've never seen a recent
single E flat horn. There are vintage E flat horns out there that are 60+
years
old, but nothing recent.
It also makes me wonder because E flat horn is pretty common and even
Strauss 2 was written for it. In fact the fingerings could be much easier and
more
fluid on an E flat horn. There are also a battery of other pieces written in
E flat (as well as E) but I'll be damned if I can find anyone that makes E
flat (or hell even E horns) anymore.
I'm not saying that one should have an arsenal of horns in every key, but
I'm just wondering because for descant needs and chamber music a single high E
flat horn could be quite useful as I'm looking at a harmonic chart here.
