Happy Friday

I wanted to provide an event post-mortem for Next Day Better event in
Toronto. Last night I spoke about how great all of you are and why it
matters. During the session, I also highlighted the importance of having
people like Maning providing local direction and all the various
partners/supporters who made it possible for HOT to help.

About the Organization
Next Day Better aims to empower the diaspora and local Filipina community
to be leaders and take action. They want to build a resilient local and
global community. The Next Day Better team is super professional with their
next event in London. Their larger goal is to host a massive event in
Manila (2015).

(I had a talk with one of the local Toronto organizers about how important
it would be to have their community attend Maptime or the Mappy Hour hosted
by Richard Weait. He thinks that we need to do this to help prepare for the
future.)

We (150 people in attendance) ate yummy food, listened to music and had
talks from an comic artist (Batman), a designer and a chef. They framed it
as a celebration to co-build a new future and be prepared with strong
relationships.Truly, I was super honoured to be the only non-Filipino
presenter. The sense of community spirit from arts to neighbours to techs
is core to Next Day Better. This is something that we could learn from.
While the participation we do is professional, I think we need to celebrate
how special HOT's community is and find ways to honour it with some smiles.

Opportunities:

   - The Next Day Better will host an event in London soon. Once it is
announced, I would recommend local folks attend.
   - Partnering with local and diaspora communities for mapping parties
during an emergency is important. I recommend this on two fronts: 1.
building common community and resilience 2. having local context and
   language expertise.

Here are my slides. I will write a blog post tomorrow to share more:
