Yeah, I thought about that. With the new ORS QGIS-Plugin one could
easily set it up to work in QGIS, I assume. But I am not sure if an
online API would be a good idea, given fragility of internet
connections. One hour internet outage in a year would excellent
service on behalf of the ISP - but in the wrong hour …

Great ressource, I should've stumbled upon before turning to the list,
but I appreciate it even more. Also, thank you very much for practical
pointer - always preferable to have a starting point.
I will do some research and maybe prototyping. Maybe I can contribute
back to the HOT community.

served our use case. I am not sure how well it makes use of osm tags
for impassable.
seems like some testing is probably needed for any of them to make
sure they honor those smoothness tags.
