Hi all,

It has been 4 years since consolidated mapping projects confronting
OpenStreetMap data against open data references ( # BaseRoadsVsOpenData)
started. These projects aim to ensure some completeness, precision and
consistency for a base roads network at a country scale, with the goal of
encouraging OSM data reuse as a reference road network data source.
Over time, 9 projects have been opened on 9 west-african countries in
coordination with local communities: Benin, Burkina Faso, Central African
Republic , Guinea, Ivory Coast, Mali, Niger, Senegal, Togo.

Since 2015, OSM contributors have made significant progress but there is always
work to do, a lot of work :) hence this call for contributions!

If you are interested, all project relative documentation is available on the
OSM Wiki:
Consolidated mapping projects - base roads check vs open data references
(https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Consolidated_mapping_projects_-_base_roads_check_vs_open_data_references
 ) .
Some context elements, country based projects list with progress status,
mapping instructions, etc.

Approach summary:
The main goal is to confront the country road network against an Open Data
reference layer and improve its completeness and precision:
* The road reference data (like gROADS) is a hint that a road probably exists
at a given place.
* An OSM mapper can then check if this road actually exists using some imagery
and check the state of OSM for this road. If necessary, it can then update OSM
to complete the road and improve its precision.
* It can also identify nearby information, like unmapped secondary roads or
residential areas.
* It can also update the OSM road entity metadata to tell when imagery quality
is not sufficient to properly identify the road (like vanishing tracks in
desert).
To coordinate mappers and help prioritize tasks (as an exemple there are 2500
task for the Mali project), one uses:
* A project in a Tasking Manager which helps monitor completeness status. Each
task area is a 500m buffer around the associated road in the reference data.
* Mali exemple: https://tasks.hotosm.org/project/813
* A priorisation uMap which identifies some tasks, in the Tasking Manager
project, that may need more attention.
* Mali exemple: http://u.osmfr.org/m/232379/

Have a good day and good mapping!!
