Or a dblink in Oracle.

It has been a few years but I once worked on an application that used a
shared SSO application.  The idea being that when you logged in you were
authenticating off the SSO application and it returned the needed access
rights based upon the application you were using so you could go to a number
of applications but you only logged in the first time.  I think it handled
this via the database but might be wrong, will have to see if I can find a
backup of the code.
