The same concept is called a "hash" in crytpographic circles. But, that
just confuses things when discussing Perl.

SHA1 is the same algorithm that git uses. MD5 is somewhat less
computationally expensive, but on a modern system it shouldn't matter.

The important point is that if two messages have the same digest, they
are the same message.
