One additional word of advice, irrespective of distribution: On an amd64 machine, the i386 version likely is going to be more satisfactory to you than the amd64 version, unless you have a pressing need for 64-bit processing.
Each of the two versions is maintained by a different team, and the versions are not always in step. Of the two, the i386 is the more popular, and thus is less likely to have quirks.
