since i am still looking for and simple good way to update the bios of
my Envy, i gave the suggestion to use virtualBox a try,
Um, I don't expect that to work -at all-.
vbox is virtualizing all the hardware, including BIOS, so of
course trying to update the real BIOS won't work.
i was able to extract the winflash.exe file from the spXXXX.exe file.
unfortunately on my VB installation WinXP the next step to run the
WinFlash.exe in order to burn the bios does not work yet :(
i may play a bit more with some of the admin user rights of the dos
shell, yet the risk of ending up with a "brain-dead" machine might be a
bit to high as that i would recommend this approach ?
The best way to update BIOS is to keep your Windows partition. :)
Since you can't go back in time, I'd suggest investigating WinPE.
I've never used it myself, but I think that's the way to go.
You can find some hints in this bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/557072
Start looking around comment #20.
Summary: you need real Windows, not virtualized Windows, to
update your BIOS.
hth,

I totally agree with this, that is why i didn't tried myself right away
... but as you said, doesn't hurt to do a small experiment
p.s. problem is that i ggot rid of my Win7 partition :)
