After Michael Gordon stated there was no visible difference between
these two settings on Photo Satin with version 6.03 of the Windows
driver, I assumed it was probably true. However, I recently stumbled
on evidence that there is a more complex interaction between the PPI
sent to the printer, whether Best or MaxDPI is selected, and print
quality.

While comparing the color of a test print on the DJ 130 on Photo Satin
with Epson 9600 on Premium Luster I noticed some "waviness" in certain
areas of the DJ 130 print. The problem was immediately noticeable to
me and did not occur on the Epson 9600 print. The problem was in
smooth areas where there was little or no variation in hue or tone,
and was most noticeable in highlights. Running an alignment had no
effect on the problem.

At first I assumed that this was just the nature of the DJ 130, but
subsequent experiments indicated otherwise. My findings:

1) Problem was very noticeable with Best setting and PPI of 240 or 360
(original image at 240 PPI, other PPI from interpolation done in
Photoshop)

2) Problem mostly resolved (about 80-90% less) if image resized to 300
PPI in Photoshop before printing, but still using Best setting.

3) Problem completely resolved with MaxDPI, regardless of whether PPI
was 240, or image resized to 300 PPI in Photoshop before printing.

Take home points:

1) In this example, resizing to 300 PPI in Photoshop before printing
on Best setting would be OK for all but the most discerning

2) If printing at other than 300 PPI, MaxDPI will provide noticeable
improvement in smoothness in highlights which vary little in hue or
tone (e.g., off-white wall).

Comments welcome.
