The Jetdirect 170x will work but you will only be running at 10base-T. The 300X is the 10/100 so if you are going to be pushing a lot of data then the 300x would be better. I have seen the lynksys print servers work on other printers so you should not have a problem. There really isn't a compatibility issue when using an external print server because all you are doing is hooking up a parallel printer cable to a device that sits on your network as a stand alone print server passing information from your PC to the printer.
