The only harsh reality here is a screen has much more brightness and
contrast range than any print ever will have.

If the prints are considerably darker than the screen you need to have a
viewing booth or lights that have a similar intensity.
I always cut the LCD screen back to make it last longer , and of course to
match the getting old CRT, and viewing booth I have. When it is all around
the same lightness and brightness, all devices match closely.
