Perhaps not the first day, but my personal experience with off brand inks has been disappointing when it comes to fade resistance. Take a look at this document. Some of the longevity figures are shockingly short. http://www.wilhelm-research.com/hardcopy/WIR_AftermarketTests2006_05.pdf Having said that, I still use cheap ink in at least one of my old Epson printers, but I only print out junk stuff, documents which don't have to last, etc. I haven't noticed any clogging issues and perhaps even less problems than with Epson ink, but that might be my imagination. The fade problem is VERY real though. I would never sell a print that was made with non factory ink unless it was tested by Wilhelm or a similar lab.
